Tortas Fritas

I'd seen a reference to tortas fritas on an Uruguay forum. "Fried cakes" sounded like something I would like, but I didn't know what they were. I had one this morning at the neighborhood farmers market. It's a simple dough the size of a dinner plate, deep-fried in oil. It's similar to Native American frybread. They're good.

For the love of mexican food, El Torero and I went in search of the ingredients for corn torillas. Could not be found. However, we figured we could find the ingredients for flour torillas. Flour, salt, water, and lard. Turns out lard as we know it, "grasa de cerdo" is really hard to find. I finally asked someone "Well what do they make all those tortas fritas and bizcochos with? "grasa de vacuna". "QUE?" "De vaca."
"OH!!!"
So we had our tortillas.
Have to say, they came out pretty good.

If you want the very best churros and are in a really decadent mood, try Manolos the next time you visit Punta. There are fresh churros hot from the oil and also churros filled with dulce de leche, chocolate or vanilla cream. Well worth the dietary damage!

In Montevideo, the stand at Bar Facal (18 de Julio y Yi) does have very good churros.

they are delish! i used to eat them all the time as a kid.
